Blue Marble (wonderful rock) in Sri Lanka

BLUE MARBLE (Garunda Gala)

You, either a local or a foreign tourist to NUWARA ELIYA – " The Little England" , must visit the fascinating and natural creation unseen by many. The Blue Marble which is the technical team for this BLUISH ROCK is situated in Pandithyakumbura Gram Sevaka division of Walapane Divisional Secretary division of the Nuwara Eliya District.

According to the tales of the older generation of the area, this BLUE MARBLE rock exists since King Rawana 's era. This area has been under thick forest cover since then and it's vital source of herbal medicinal plants for Aurvedic native physicians. The public believes, a tribal monkey from our neighboring country- India, had brought a piece of  BLUE MARBLE to treat skin disease of " Princes Seetha" during king Rawana's regime. A portion of the BLUE MARBLE  left after treatment was hidden in a lake. Though this lake is called Marble Lake ( Garunda Wewa) , the BLUE MARBLE is not seen there. However the BLUE MARBLE has surfaced nearly three kilo meters away from the lake. It is a pity to say that the BLUE MARBLE and its surroundings are endangered and human activity has obstructed the flow of most of the natural streams here.
Beautiful water fall- Kurundu Ella, and little World's End near Harasbedda village. Walapane are two places of tourist attraction and could be considered as natural heritages.  The sacred Buddhist temples- Peace Pagoda, Watarakgoda  ancient temple are of  paramount importance. At the same time, the ruins left of Cattle Shed and some clues to indicated the activities of Milk Maids, speaks of the prosperity of Dairy Husbandry prevailed in Walapane during ancient kings time.

Visitors to this impressive location should come to Ragala via Nuwara Eliya and travel 6 km along Dorawa road to reach Pandithayakumbura village.
It is only 03km to Cattle shed ruins along the same road. Little World's End is located on Morbedda road from Harasbedda town which is about 7 km on Ragala- Walapane road. It's about 20km from Ragala  to Peace Pagoda and Kurunduella (water fall) is just 4 km away from Peace Pagoda. You can reach Watarakgoda  ancient temple by traveling a distance of 1 km from Walapane and 18km  to Rupaha Temple.
